Memories from the Hills
of West Virginia
True Stories of Life in Appalachia
From the private papers of Harry Franklin Shaw
Transcribed and Edited by
Herbert L. Roush, Sr.
Mr. Roush takes a unique approach to a book of short stories. The delightful tales in this book are TRUE. He has chosen to tell them through a fictional character. The voice is Harry Franklin Shaw's, but the stories were lived by Mr. Roush. A young city preacher goes to the hills of West Virginia. There he rides horseback to five churches and suffers cultural and religious shock. On these pages are the laughter, tears, fears and hopes, of his beloved hill people, and a way of life now gone. This book contains a look at life in Appalachia that few have seen, and holds the heart of a simple man who lived it. Curl up by the fire and, as you read, take a trip back in time. Once there, you will meet the good hill folk of Sassafras, West Virginia. You will learn their speech, customs and share their lives.
